I recently re-read Victor Frankl’s, “Man’s Search for Meaning,” and this quote reminded me of my patient’s grace: What struck me was the calmness and humility with which my patient accepted their fate. I ordered urgent imaging, and it came back with the diagnosis of likely metastatic cancer. When I looked into their eye, I saw a couple of things that bothered me. A few years ago, a patient was referred to me for a second opinion for fluid in the retina.ĩ9% of cases like this are due to diabetes or age-related macular degeneration. I honestly don’t know if I learn more from my patients, or if they learn more from me.
